Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day

Famously, everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. It’s one of the most uplifting parts of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration in my mind, the idea that even for a day we’re all the same and we should all be celebrating each other. Unless you forgot to wear green that is.

To me, this idea of inclusion extends to the styles of drinks that can be used to celebrate the day. If we’re including all people in the celebration, why shouldn’t we involve all styles of cocktails? I love an Irish Coffee more than I’ve loved some pets but that is not the be-all and end-all of what a St. Patrick's Day celebration should include.

Visiting Ireland

I was recently fortunate enough to visit Ireland for the first time and was struck not only by the beauty of the land but by the hospitality of the people. There was also a striking diversity and abundance of options in the cocktail scene. There were of course the classics, but also a bar fully devoted to non-alcoholic drinks, bars using all ingredients only distilled or grown in Ireland, and everywhere you went a clear love of Gin.

While the Spanish-style Gin and Tonic has been all the rage for a few years now I would argue that an Irish Gin and Tonic should be a category as well. This love of gin, combined with that welcoming spirit of Hospitality, and the need for green makes Tanqueray No. TEN is a surprisingly perfect pairing for St. Patrick’s Day.

The first way to celebrate is with the Garden Tonic. This takes the basic idea of a Gin & Tonic, uses a citrus tonic, and adds in herbs to create a deeper flavor. By building it all in the glass it allows the herbs to steep in the drink allowing it to change over time. One of my favorite things to add to a drink is time, building a drink that has a journey over its lifespan is a wonderful thing. Try this template below to experiment with what different flavors you can pull out of Tanqueray No. TEN. By building it all in the glass it allows the herbs to steep in the drink allowing it to change over time.

Green Sting

Try out a lively gimlet variation with The Green Sting! This drink combines Tanqueray No. TEN, with the herbaceousness of a french alpine liqueur, and the surprising green notes of a stinging nettle cordial.
