Interesting Facts
The Aviation is shaken and served neat. It is essentially a Gin Sour, but instead of just sugar syrup, the sourness of the lemon juice is balanced by the sweetness of the Maraschino Liqueur and occasionally Crème de Violet Liqueur. It has appeared in numerous motion pictures and television programs, like The Aviator and Mad Men.
History of the drink
The Aviation is a classic cocktail from the early 1900s. It is believed to have been invented by Hugo Ensslin, the head bartender at the Hotel Wallick in New York City. The Aviation was first published in Ensslin's 1916 book Recipes for Mixed Drinks. The Aviation became popular in the 1920s but fell out of favor during Prohibition. It was revived in the 1930s and has been popular ever since.
