The drink was created by British Royal Navy surgeon Sir Thomas Gimlette in the 19th century. It was oriGinally made with Gin and Lime Juice, and was used as a way to prevent scurvy among sailors. The recipe eventually made its way to shore, where it became a popular cocktail, where bartenders tweaked the recipe making it much more palatable.
