INTERESTING FACTS
Many cocktails were made with salted or sugared rims during, and immediately after Prohibition, because the quality of alcoholic beverages was not so great.
History of the Drink
The Savoy Cocktail Book by bartender and author Harry Craddock was published in 1930 and contains the oldest record of a cocktail of this sort. According to Craddock, his recipe is ‘A version of the Grapefruit Cocktail’. This indicates that these drinks were well-established before his book was published. The only ingredients in his recipe are Gin, Grapefruit Juice and ice. In 1945, Harper's Magazine publishes a Greyhound cocktail recipe for a similar beverage.
