How can I prepare for my first shift as a new bartender?
Preparing for your first shift as a new bartender is both physical and mental! Make sure that you’re well fed and well rested so you can be mentally and physically present for your first shift. Also – be on time! We say it’s best to be 10 minutes early, but really it’s to ensure we’re always on time.
What is the most important skill of a bartender?
Easy… teamwork! A venue runs smoothly because there’s a team that’s working well behind the scenes. Stay curious – always challenge and discover what is possible. Be consistent and determined for success.
I just started last month. How can I build my confidence as a new bartender?
Get to know your bar and learn why your guests come to your venue – then it’ll be more clear what your role is. Also, work closely with your team and be there to serve your guests… confidence will come!
How can I improve guest experiences?
It's all about the details. Every person that comes into your bar should be acknowledged. While it’s just another shift for you, it may be a special night for your guest, so everybody needs to be made to feel special, acknowledged and appreciated.
What's the best way to learn about mixing flavours?
Books help! There are some great books out there about flavours and neurogastronomy. Understanding the theory helps, but make sure you constantly taste and test everything! Discover new ingredients and discover how to apply them – when you’re creating cocktails you want to be intentional. You want to taste and understand the flavour profiles of your base spirit and focus on how you can highlight and modify that by staying true to the spirit.
How do you remember alI the recipes?
It takes some time & practice. ‘The Joy of Mixology’ by Gary Reagan helped me understand how drinks are built. Once you’ve gained this knowledge, you have a clear understanding of segmentation. Also, make the drinks and learn their stories.
Tips and tricks on becoming more efficient?
Preparation and space are key! Set up well. If you prepare well, you will deliver well. Also, batching is a great tool. You can check on Diageo Bar Academy & World Class modules for e-learning modules where they have more tips, tricks and details.
How can I progress as a bartender?
Take yourself and your job seriously, but without being arrogant. Connect with people and share your vision.
How to select cocktails?
There is no one perfect menu because every bar has specific needs, but we can ensure our menu is inclusive. This could mean offering a highball, a slushie, and non-alcoholic drinks! Have something for everyone.
What skills can I practice to become a better bartender?
Hospitality. Be hospitable but also, learn your classics! You cannot be a strong building without pillars. Classic cocktails are the pillars of what we do in bartending and within mixology.
How do you see the future of the cocktail menu?
A wise lady told me last week that whilst we could do anything, why wouldn’t we make art? And even better, art that tastes nice?
