The Bobby Burns is one of the few cocktails that’s made with Scotch Whiskey. The cocktail is also made with sweet vermouth and Benedictine, which is a herbal liqueur.
History of the drink
The Bobby Burns cocktail, which is believed to have been named after either the Scottish poet or a cigar salesman, has a history that dates to the 1900s, when it appeared under the name ‘Baby Burns’ in a recipe guide. Cocktail historian, Gary 'Gaz' Regan, found a picture in the 1923 edition of Valentine's Manual of Old New York, which suggested that the drink might have been named after a location in New York. However, the true origins of the Bobby Burns cocktail remain uncertain. The first printed recipe for the drink appeared in the 1930 edition of The Savoy Cocktail Book, while the first American written appearance came a year later in the Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Days, but with a different recipe and named ‘Robert Burns’.
